About and FAQ

Who is VBC and what do you do?

Virginia Book Company is a private, local, independent college bookstore primarily serving the VCU community.

Why should I shop at VBC? Don't we already have an official campus bookstore?

Your official campus bookstore is owned and operated by Barnes & Noble. There are differences in price, shopping experience and selection between a mega-bookstore and a local mom-and-pop.

VBC tries to set itself apart from the campus bookstore with our exclusive VCU & greek merchandise, GUARANTEED lower prices on VCU textbooks, great selection of used textbooks & excellent customer service. We believe that if you shop and compare, you'll choose to bring your business to VBC.

The VCU bookstore promises to match your prices & you guarantee the lowest prices, what gives?

Some bookstores play games, we don't! We publish our prices online so you can compare with the campus bookstore. We are lower every time. If we find a mistake, we'll lower our shelf-price immediately. The other bookstore will only match prices on a case by case basis. Why go through the hassle when you can just buy from us and save?

How do I know what books & supplies I need?

We do most of the work for you. We are constantly checking the class listings and working with a variety of sources to find out what books the professor has selected. Once you've enrolled in the class, you can visit our store or our website; the materials are arranged by class & section. We can tell you whether there are required and/or optional materials for that class.

It is also important that you confirm the materials with your instructor once the class meets. Always double check your syllabus to make sure you have the books and supplies required for your class. Due to last minute changes and miscommunication, some of our information may be wrong; so it is ultimately your responsibility to make sure that you have the right materials.

How do I return or exchange something that I bought?

VBC's refund policy is posted in the store and on the back of every receipt. Some factors can change depending upon what you bought and when you bought it. Below are the main requirements:

  • You must have your receipt.
  • The materials must be in the condition as purchased.
  • Textbook returns are only allowed at the beginning of the semester. Fall and Spring returns are allowed for one week from the start of the semester. Summer & Intersession returns are allowed for one day from the start of the class. At all other times, textbooks are non-returnable.
  • All other merchandise can be returned for one day after the purchase.
  • Credit Card purchases must be refunded back to the same credit card.
  • We allow refunds so that mistakes or last minute changes can be addressed. We reserve the right to charge a restocking fee and/or refuse a return that does not meet the return policy.
  • Some refunds may require up to a 20% restocking fee. See store for full refund policy details.

See our full return policy here.

Can you buy my unwanted textbooks?

VBC buys back unwanted textbooks all day everyday. Please visit our buyback page for more information.

I'm a faculty member how do I submit my book order?

VBC works hard to get this information. By submitting your information directly to us, you will insure that we order the correct materials and have them available at the best price possible. A simple phone call to 804-359-1222 or an e-mail to jgreer@vabookco.com usually works best.
